The Scientific Diving Summer School of Panarea is organised by OGS, in partnership with La Sapienza University of Rome and CO2GeoNet, in collaboration with INGV.
The school is open to graduates and postgraduates students, PhD and post-doc researchers in scientific disciplines and professionals involved in the study and management of land and sea. Topics include the geological features of the unique active volcanic area of the island of Panarea, its biological components adapted to naturally acidified vents systems, and the characterization of hydrothermal fluids.
Participants will be trained in:
• multi-parameter monitoring
• underwater techniques for sampling of CO2-rich fluids
• investigation of benthic communities
• techniques to monitor the effects of ocean acidification at organisms, communities, and ecosystems/habitat levels
• scientific diving planning.
TEACHING PROGRAM
The course consists of 5 scientific dives, lectures cover topics in physical, chemical, and biological oceanography and geosciences (volcanology and CO2 geological storage), with particular emphasis on marine hydrothermal systems, ocean acidification, underwater monitoring and sampling techniques applied to volcanology, marine geology and biology, and environmental impact evaluation.
Minimal Application requirements:
✔️ a diving license (issued by an Scuba Diving Association),
✔️ a minimum of 20 certified dives (also recreational)
✔️ a medical certificate valid for Scuba Diving
✔️ a personal diving insurance (i.e. DAN, Aquamed or equivalent).
